I read a lot of reviews on various websites, including this one, before deciding to give Madden another whirl. But I suddenly had the itch to give Madden another try since it had been over two years since I played and prior to that, I had bought the game ten years straight.
In other words, I have as much experience playing Madden as anyone and I hope those reading this will trust my review. First off, a lot of the negative reviews on here stem from two issues: some customization being taken away and the confusion over what people are labeling as the removal of franchise mode in favor of Connected Careers. I'll address both. The customization complaint stems from fans who like to have a fantasy draft and then use that roster for their franchise.
I'm not one of these fans but if you like it, I can understand being aggravated this has been removed. To me, this isn't that big of a deal but if you like a fantasy draft, this may be a deal breaker for you. However, I hope it isn't because there are some vast improvements in this game I'll speak on a little later on. The second negative point, Connected Careers, is still a Franchise Mode, it's just that it can be played a number of different ways really no different than in the past.
You can also create a character and control them through their entire career similar to "Superstar" mode from the past. Again, I'm not really sure what all the complaints over a lack of franchise mode are all about, it's basically retitled "Connected Careers" and you can play one online or offline, whichever you choose. I saw some other complaints about obtaining XP to use on upgrading your characters or coach. I love this feature and you can either manually upgrade your players attributes or have the computer do it for you at frequencies you designate at the beginning of your franchise.
It's similar to a role playing game where you use points earned to learn new abilities. A reason I think this is a great feature it that it prevents some players from becoming "too good. To me, this is ridiculous and eliminates some of the challenge of playing a football game that should demand strategy instead of seeing how many players become a 99 overall so you can dominate without having to try.
Some people may like this but I think most would not. Actual football fans will appreciate the depth and challenge of managing a virtual football team. A team will earn XP based on performance and so will the coach. What does XP do for your coach? You can purchase packages that give you more leverage in negotiating contracts for various different positions, allow your team to earn XP more quickly, and give you more scouting points to spend on scouting college players during the season ahead of next season's draft.
The tackling system is amazing and no two tackles are alike. Gang tackles are realistic and fans old and new will appreciate the realistic tackling formations. There are a few cons and bugs that don't make sense but not enough to keep someone from enjoying the game.
First, EA promised all new playbooks but they're pretty much the same plays from all previous versions of the game, so I'm not sure what happened here. Also, defensive playbooks are missing pre-snap double coverage defenses. In previous versions a player could choose a defensive scheme pre-snap where either one or both of the outside receivers, the slot receiver, or the tight end were double covered but these have strangely been removed.
Even worse, while EA has greatly improved options available pre-snap once a defensive scheme has been called you can now individually choose bump and run coverage or back other DBs off individual receivers instead of being forced to either bump and run all receivers are back all of them off they haven't included an option to double cover a receiver on the fly.
Instead, you can "spotlight" a certain player and the defense will key in on them. Not a bad option, but we should have the option to double or triple cover a receiver if we want to. In Franchise mode, I normally pick the Raiders and get a thrill from doing this. But the opposing teams act strangely when you play against them. While it is true you can scheme your way to victory, all these wins were easy and saw my defense pick off a number of passes that I can only dream the Raiders secondary could achieve.
The strangest glitch is when you start a franchise, all the opposing teams will auto-reorder their depth charts. Why is this a problem? This may sound confusing but start a franchise then check out each team's depth chart. This is a glitch EA overlooked. Overall, I really like the game. There are a few oddball glitches here and there but it seems like every Madden EA puts out has some error they didn't catch or if they did, they didn't care to fix it.
This is greatly frustrating for football fans looking for a realistic virtual football experience and shows a genuine lack of caring to put out the best product possible. Instead, EA accepts there is no other competition so if you don't like it, there is no place else to turn. I will stress again, a football fan will really like this game, but EA could do a few things better to make it the best and show pride in their product.
Let me first qualify by saying that it has been 6 years since I have bought a Madden game at launch time. This is because they failed to deliver a good product in that time period IMHO. Some of the key things I really like: -Improved physics engine-Gang tackles for instance actually happen this time. However, you still have some goofy things happen like guys falling down after the play for no reason, but no big deal.
I doesn't feel as "arcadish" like it did in the past. Running controls are good too. It feels more realistic to me. They actually have real conversations about the game and they don't annoy the crap out of you like Cris Collinsworth used to.
There are times however when they do get a bit repetitive, but overall I'm pleased with the change. I like the concept and now that I'm a couple of games into the season, I think it makes things much easier.
You can have a career as either a player or a coach. Playing as a coach is just like the Franchise mode of old, with a couple of omissions which I mention below. Bottom line-I'm loving it. This is a disappointment, however overall I think more was gained in the Connected Career mode than lost. Usually I don't use this feature, but I know that a lot of people are highly upset at the fact that this feature is missing.
I'm not one of them though. Overall, I really like the changes here. I have seen a lot of people that are really upset at the omissions in this game.
This seems to be the continuing saga with the Madden series. People love to bash them for only providing a "roster update" each year, but now that they have created something different and they tried to do something outside the box Connected Career mode for instance people get bent out of shape for it. My conclusion is that there are just some people that won't be happy with Madden no matter what.
I tip my cap to EA for daring to think outside the box and provide an enjoyable football experience. For the first time in years, I actually don't want to put the controller down when I play a Madden game. As an huge NFL fan, that is a great feeling.
